CENTRE WELLINGTON – Easter is just around the corner and organizers in Fergus and Elora hope kids will come out for two separate Easter egg hunt events.
In Fergus there will be a Golden Egg Hunt, which might make you think of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but that’s not quite how it works.
Instead of just one golden egg, there are 250 of them, available for pickup, one per family, at I Love Chocolate, Fraberts Fresh Food or The Vault Café Bar.
Inside the eggs are some child-friendly treats, and a draw ticket to win prizes donated by downtown businesses, including the grand prize of $150 BIA dollars to use in any downtown business.
There will also be instructions on how to win a second draw ticket. Simply take a photo of your family with the egg, post it on social media, and tag one of the participating businesses along with the hashtag #CWGoldenEgg.
“They did it in Dufferin last Easter and it was such a huge hit, we decided to do it here,” said realtor Claire Knight, who along with mortgage agent Jenn Price and the Fergus BIA have put the hunt together.
“The number one thing we want to do is raise excitement in the community. After being kept inside and kept apart, everybody is ready for some fun.
“And the second thing is to partner with local businesses. We want people to go back to shopping at local businesses again.”
Knight noted several new businesses have opened during the pandemic and there’s lots to discover.
“And they could all use the support,” Price added. “We hope this will create a buzz.”
The event runs April 11 to 16 and draw prize winners will be announced during a live Facebook event on April 18.
The prizes, which have been donated by local businesses, are to be picked up at the business providing the prize.
The duo has also arranged for the Easter Bunny to visit Fergus. Here’s his schedule:
- April 8, 10 to 11am: String Theory;
- April 11, 10 to 11am: Fergies Fine Foods;
- April 12, 10 to 11am: Fraberts Fresh Food;
- April 13, 10 to 11am: The Vault Café Bar; and
- April 14, 10 to 11am: I Love Chocolate.
More information will be posted on the Facebook page CW Golden Egg Hunt 2022.
Elora hunt
Meanwhile, Knox Presbyterian Church in Elora is also planning an Easter egg hunt for kids, from April 2 to 13.
Organizers will put posters of Easter eggs in the windows of 12 participating businesses and children are invited to find them.
The church is asking children to pre-register for the hunt and then record the number on the poster and the merchant’s name when they find them, along with their own name.
These ballots can be placed in the ballot box outside the south door of Knox church or emailed to knoxelora@wightman.ca.
Then, on April 16, the church will be open from 9:30 am to noon and children can come and claim their prize. All children who enter will receive a prize.
“We want to make ourselves known after two years of being shut down,” said Jean Jackson, speaking on behalf of the organizing committee.
“And we thought it would be good for the merchants. But really, it’s for the kids. We hope they’ll have fun with it.”
