EA planned in advance of roadwork

Wellington County has launched an Environmental Assessment study in advance of proposed improvements to Wellington Road 124. As a part of work to improve traffic flow, drainage, safety and other considerations on Wellington Road 124 from Guelph to the Region of Waterloo, the two Wellington Road 32 intersections with 124 are planned for reconstruction in 2020.

Prior to proceeding with the design work for the intersection improvements, it was determined that a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) will have to be completed as a part of the overall project,” states a staff report from construction manager Mark Eby presented at the April 10 roads committee meeting.
“Since an EA has to be completed for the two intersection improvements and that there is work planned from Fife to Guelph Road 1 to be completed by 2023 (Whitelaw intersection improvements, storm sewer, possible centre left turn lane), the entire road will be completed as a Schedule ‘C’ EA,” Eby states in the report.
“The EA will be commencing in the immediate future with the intent that it will be completed by the end of 2018 or early 2019.”
The report notes at least one public information session will be held as part of the EA process.
Roads committee chair councillor Gary Williamson said although work on Wellington Road 124 will be done in stages, the EA is encompassing all the planned roadwork.
“One of the things we’ve done here to try and save some money, because of all the projects that are going to take place on 124 – the intersection of 32, roundabout, a whole bunch of things – we’ve decided that it’s best to do the whole road in the assessment process, rather than trying to do it in two separate stages.”
