Drayton’s Bruce Schieck died, surrounded by family, Sept. 16

DRAYTON – Bruce Schieck spent his whole life living in the Drayton area.

He was a school board trustee for 27 years and served on the Drayton Festival Theatre board of directors from its foundation in 1991 until his death.

According to an obituary from Heritage Funeral Homes, Schieck “passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of family at Hospice Wellington, Guelph on Sept. 16, in his 84th year.

“Bruce had a true love for his family, farming and the community,” his obituary states.

“Bruce was a champion for public education and for his community,” stated Upper Grand District School Board officials.

“He was first elected as a trustee in the former Wellington County Board of Education in 1991, representing the rural communities of Wellington County, and served as a trustee in the UGDSB from  1998 to 2018.”

Schieck received the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association President’s Award in 2018, which honours trustees “who have stood by their vision and selflessly given of themselves to the students and parents of Ontario for more than 25 years.”

Schieck’s family and friends honoured him with a celebration of life at the Moorefield Community Centre on Sept. 22 and a funeral at the centre the following day, followed by an interment in Bethesda Cemetery.

His family asks that expressions of sympathy be made as donations to 4-H Ontario, the Drayton Entertainment for Youth Academy, Drayton United Church, Hospice Wellington, or other charities.
