A two-year-old German shepherd mix that fell about 30 metres into the Elora Gorge last weekend is expected to make a full recovery.
On Dec. 16 at about 4pm Centre Wellington firefighters responded to the gorge to assist humane society officials with an animal rescue.
“As always they did an outstanding job,” Fire Chief Brad Patton tweeted of volunteer firefighters, who took time out from a Christmas party to rescue the dog.
Two days following the rescue, Lisa Veit, associate director of the Guelph Humane Society, said the dog is doing well.
The dog was “in shock” immediately after the fall and it did suffer “serious” injuries to a shoulder and a hind leg, Veit explained.
“We are optimistic he’s going to make a full recovery,” she told the Advertiser, adding the dog may have limited mobility in its injured leg.
“If someone hadn’t seen him fall, it could have been a very different outcome,” Veit said, adding she is thankful for firefighters’ efforts.
Following surgery the dog will be placed in a foster home for six to eight weeks to recover. It will then be available for adoption.
