ELORA – Braving winter weather, local firefighters descended into the darkness above the Grand River last Thursday evening to rescue a dog that fell into the Elora Gorge in the area of the Wellington Road 7 bridge.
Centre Wellington deputy fire chief Jonathan Karn said the call came in just before 5pm on Jan. 24 and 20 firefighters responded.
“Crews located the dog downstream from the bridge,” Karn stated.
“The owner and the dog had been walking along the south-side trail, west of the bridge, when the dog fell approximately 60 feet.”
Karn added, “The dog had landed on a frozen section of the river and was visibly injured. Fire crews performed a rope rescue to retrieve the dog.”
The dog appeared to have a broken leg and was transported to a vet for treatment.
Fire crews returned to the station just before 6:30pm.
Karn said fire officials are reminding residents to “keep pets on a leash at all times” around the Elora Gorge.
“With the recent winter weather we have received the trails are icy and snow covered. Off-leash pets may get dangerously close to the edge resulting in falls and injuries,” he added.
