Dog dies after falling into Elora Gorge

A dog is dead after falling into the Elora Gorge last week.

On Jan 4 at about 1:15pm, police and firefighters responded to the gorge near Wellington Road 7 for a dog that was trapped in the water after falling into the gorge.

Crews located the dog but it was already too late. Due to safety concerns they decided not to retrieve the deceased pet, which was reportedly not on a leash at the time of the accident.

This was the second time in three weeks a dog fell into the gorge. On Dec. 16 Centre Wellington firefighters rescued a German shepherd from the gorge. The dog suffered serious injuries to a shoulder and a hind leg, but underwent surgery and is currently recovering in a foster home. It is expected to make a full recovery and be available for adoption.

Police are reminding the public to exercise caution around the gorge and to keep pets on a leash.
