District chief honoured for 25 years of service

Wellington North district fire chief Bill Hieber was honoured by council, friends, family and colleagues on Aug. 28 for 25 years of service with the department.

Hieber began his 27th year with Wellington North Fire Service in August.

“Our volunteer firefighters are the backbone of the fire service in this province and across the country,” said acting mayor Lisa Hern.

“They must leave family events on a moment’s notice; birthdays, soccer, Christmas etc. In fact, I’m told Bill was at a fire last Christmas day.

“On behalf of the Township of Wellington North, I’d like to thank him for his outstanding dedication and professionalism.”

The room, which was packed for the special presentation, burst into applause.

Fire Chief Dave Guilbault said Hieber was instrumental to the fire department.

“Just his leadership and his knowledge and his experience; it goes without saying, we need guys like Bill around,” he said.

“He’s a great colleague and we’re certainly glad to recognize him.”

Hieber joined the fire department because of his brother John.

“I’ve seen him rushing to the calls, riding the truck, that was back in the day when you could still ride the tailboard, and you’d fly up main street on the tailboard of the pumper and everybody would be looking at you,” Hieber said.

“I’m more honoured to be apart of the community, proud to serve.”

Hieber received a certificate from the township for his service.
