Diabetes was the topic of conversation at the Merry Makers meeting held on Oct. 2 at Jamesway Manor in Clifford.
Irene Kaufman welcomed 25 people. It was reported that Barb Harris will lay the gorup’s wreath at the Remembrance Day service. Happy birthday was sung to Ruby Bell and Irene Kaufman. The Christmas meeting will be held on Dec. 3 at noon at the St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Diabetes nurse educator Margaret Stevens and dietitian Jennifer Degrandis-Graham from the Palmerston and District Hospital shared their personal stories with diabetes before engaging in an informal question and answer presentation.
Everyone is at risk for Diabetes due to an unhealthy diet and lack of activity, the noted. Borderline was a term used many years ago that is still prevalent today, but either you have diabetes or you do not, they explained. Pre-diabetes can be determined through a blood test at the hospital.
People with Type 1 Diabetes need insulin to survive, as their pancreas does not produce any insulin anymore. They need to regulate the foods they eat and keep unhealthy choices limited.
People with Type 2 Diabetes need to control their diabetes though their food and exercise as their pancreas still produces insulin, but their body is unable to use it properly.
People with diabeties can’t take a vacation from it, but you can live a normal life. Keeping active will strengthen your heart and muscles and help you lose weight. Swimming is excellent.
November 14th is World Diabetes Day.
