Design guidelines and info session set for Elora bridges

Residents here will have another opportunity to participate in a second public information session on bridge projects on June 28.

The information session at the Elora Community Centre starts at 6:30pm, but the formal presentation will take place at 7pm, followed by a “community café workshop.”

The workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to discuss the draft bridge design guidelines, Victoria Street pedestrian bridge concepts and West Mill St. public realm enhancements in working groups.

Centre Wellington township retained Stantec Consulting Ltd. and BT Engineering to undertake an assessment for bridge replacement strategies of the Victoria Street pedestrian bridge.

The bridge was initially constructed in 1842 and underwent many rehabilitations and replacements until it was demolished in 2005 due to severe deterioration of the superstructure.

The stone piers were left in the river and will be used for the construction of the proposed pedestrian bridge.

The first public information centre was held on May 18 to give residents an opportunity to generate ideas around design elements that should be reflected in guidelines for the downtown bridges.

The design guidelines will be used to influence the designs of the Victoria Street pedestrian bridge, the Metcalfe Street/Badley bridge and the proposed Pearle Hospitality walkway at the Elora Mill redevelopment.

More than 100 people provided their thoughts on the bridge design guidelines, including several detailed design submissions from members of the community.

The Stantec planning team has reviewed public comments from the first meeting and used them to prepare the draft bridge design guidelines.

In the document there is a list of conceptual bridge alternatives (including concept submissions from the public) for the Victoria Street pedestrian bridge. In addition the June 28 meeting will include conceptual streetscape enhancements to West Mill Street.

The design guidelines to be presented at the meeting are available for review prior at www.centrewellington.ca/victoriastreet.
