Deputy mayor Terry Fisk lauded local media at the June 4 council meeting.
Fisk, chairing in the absence of Mayor George Bridge who was with a Wellington County delegation making a presentation at an economic development and business retention conference in Memphis, said the topic came up at a recent Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference.
“They had a question and answer period and talked about how poorly prepared our MPs and MPPs are with respect to what goes on at the municipal level – mainly because none of them have served in that capacity,” said Fisk.
“And then there was a fellow who came off the floor and said he felt it was even more of a problem because the media virtually doesn’t care, or doesn’t show up at [municipal council] meetings. So, therefore, the public isn’t as well informed as they should be.”
Fisk continued, “I have to beg to differ with that gentleman. We’re very fortunate that we have media here at every meeting and we get great coverage and you do a great job of informing the citizens of what’s going on here.
“It’s important. It’s part of being transparent and you help us to be transparent,” Fisk said.
