MAPLETON – Mayor Gregg Davidson is calling for all levels of government to work together to address a health care system crisis.
“Our national health care system is in crisis,” stated Davidson in opening remarks at the July 12 Mapleton council meeting.
“Unfortunately we are seeing this locally as well.”
“We heard last council meeting from the Minto-Mapleton Healthcare Professional Recruitment Committee about the desperate need to fill their vacancies.
“At the end of May, it was announced that the Louise Marshall Hospital and Palmerston hospital would be closing their obstetrics departments from June 6 to September 6.”
Davidson continued, “This past week, because of a lack of staff, Louise Marshall Hospital is closing their emergency departments on July 16th and 17th, from 5pm to 7am.
“And also this past month at county council, there was a report regarding the ongoing off-loading issues for the Guelph-Wellington paramedics at all of our hospitals.”
He added, “Retirements, resignations, burnout and staff mental health issues are all contributing factors to our current situation locally and nationally.
“We need all levels of government to work together to repair and upgrade our health care system so that no citizen’s life is put in jeopardy.
“As for our local healthcare providers, be kind to them. They are working under extreme conditions that were not brought on by their own doing.”
Davidson thanked all local health care providers “for serving our residents well.”
