The RBC parking lot on St. Andrew Street East here was the scene of cheering students and cyclists taking a break on their 180km journey from Oakville to Beaver Valley.
Organizer Roseanne Van Hees said there were 68 riders this year, and they had nearly perfect weather.
“It’s all for the Special Olympics,” she explained, adding that the group is simply an informal one, made up of people from all over who simply like to ride bicycles.
“They’re all elite riders,” she added.
Students from St. Joseph Catholic elementary school in Fergus were on hand to cheer for the riders. Teacher Scott Curtis said the school donated $200, so its students were part of the Fergus festivities.
This is the fifth year the cyclists have been doing the tour. Van Hees said it started en years ago “with seven guys,” and more people joined each year. This is the fifth year it is a charity ride.
The OPP Golden Helmets accompanied the cyclists along their route for safety. The OPP has also long supported the Special Olympics with its annual Torch Run.
