FERGUS – The Centre Wellington District High School has officially opened its new media lab.
On Nov. 20 school staff, board staff, parent council representatives and students gathered to celebrate the new space.
The lab, which was a year in the making, was funded by the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program through the Upper Grand District School Board.
“The CW SHSM Media Lab is designed as a space for students and staff to make creative content in an innovative space,” said Centre Wellington high school cross curricular lead Billie Gitter.
“The lab is full of both hardware and software alongside audio, digital and other production equipment.
“It is designed to nurture and enhance the integration between innovative ideas and media technologies.”
The idea was to have a classroom where the teacher instructs from the middle of the room, with students working at different stations around them.
Students are able to film on a green screen, create a podcast or even put together a movie.
“When I brought my class down we used the iMac and they used words like ‘cool’ and ‘exciting’ and then they went and sat down and they said ‘this is so comfortable,’” said teacher/librarian Laura Griffin of her Grade 9 English class.
“They really loved being in here.
“They described the room afterwards as advanced and futuristic.”
