Bring the kids, take the night off and enjoy a meal supporting the CW Community Dinner Project.
Diane Ballantyne and chef Chris Jess recently announced the event would resume on Sept. 11 at the Centre Wellington District High School cafeteria.
Having the event on a Tuesday is a change from last year’s Thursday schedule.
In addition to a delicious free meal (by donation only), the organizers invited all municipal candidates to attend (over a dozen are confirmed already).
Each will have a table for their literature/signs and the opportunity to chat one on one with community members.
This is not an all candidates meeting, candidates will not be addressing the group.
The purpose of the non-partisan event is to support the Centre Wellington Food Bank, CW Social Justice Group and the philosophy of community-building through shared experiences.
There will also be a volunteer to help with checking the voter list and to help with voter registration if needed.
History
The CW Community Dinner Project began in October 2017 after a CW Social Justice Group meeting, where it was determined there was a gap in service for a weekly affordable and accessible meal in the Centre Wellington community.
Jess agreed to plan and prepare the meals. Various student and community volunteers help facilitate the event.
The dinners have grown from an initial 35 attendees to consistently serving anywhere from 100 to 150 per month.
The beauty of the event is that it crosses all age and economic divides and “regulars” are now evident.
Each month has had a theme, such as Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Youth Mental Health, Legal Aid etc.
“Get Registered to Vote” will be the theme for this upcoming dinner.
Doors open at 5:30pm. Dinner is served at 6pm. The evening wraps up by 7:30pm.
