Family fun is the name of the game when the Fergus Curling Club opens its rink for Family Day on Feb. 20, inviting people of all ages to try the “other” best game played on Canadian ice.
“There’s nothing like throwing a rock, but not everyone has had the opportunity or exposure to try this exciting sport,” said Janet Tolton, past president of the Fergus Curling Club. “We have curlers as young as six years old, to 85 years old.”
In January, the club learned it was receiving an Ontario 150 Community Celebration Grant from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport in the amount of $5,043.
“With the support of the Ontario 150 Community Celebration Grant, our club is able to create a full schedule of free family-friendly activities,” Tolton said.
From 11am to 4pm, the public is welcome to grab a broom, throw a stone and sweep toward the button. Lessons for those keen to learn more will run at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Volunteers will serve free hot dogs, snacks, hot beverages and more.
Board games, a colouring contest and crafts for kids will be set up for added fun.
From 2 to 4pm, local band Poverty’s Arse will entertain the audience. A cash bar will operate from 11am to 4pm.
Throughout the day, there will be door prizes and draws for free memberships.
