Over 75 people enjoyed crepes, good conversation and the “la joie de vivre” while raising funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
The Dec. 1 fundraiser at Cafe Creperie restaurant in Elora, was organized by Grandmothers of the Grand.
Organizers offered a big thank you to owner-chef Jacques Dion and his staff for partnering with Grandmothers of the Grand for the event.
A portion of the evening’s profits will go to the foundation to support the Grandmothers and the Orphans that they care for in Africa, whose lives have been so affected by HIV and AIDS.
The local event was one of over a dozen held across Canada as grandmothers and grand-others held vigils outside the offices of Members of Parliament to mark Dec. 1 – International Aids Day.
Supporters are urging MPs to amend and support Bill C-393, which streamlines Canada’s Access to Medicines Regime.
Created by parliament in 2004, the goal of getting lower-cost generic medicines for AIDS and other public health problems in developing countries.
A recent release by the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network has stated “With more than 1.8 million people dying of AIDS in 2009, including 260,000 children, the opportunity presented by this proposed legislation must be seized.”
