WELLINGTON COUNTY – Confirmed COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are up in the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) region, as the pandemic’s seventh wave continues.
There are 300 confirmed active cases in the region as of July 27, an increase of 15% from 260 cases a week ago.
Following a steady decline in May and most of June, local cases have essentially doubled this month – from 153 on July 3 to 300 on July 27.
In Wellington County, there are 76 known active cases as of July 27, up 38% from 55 a week ago.
In Dufferin County there are 35 actives cases (down from 48) and in Guelph there are 174 (up from 142).
On July 13, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore stated actual case counts across the province are likely five times the reported numbers.
Hospitalizations
Twenty-six people are hospitalized with COVID-19 across the region, with one in an intensive care unit [ICU] – up from 19 on July 18 (one in an ICU).
Hospitalizations have increased dramatically since the end of May, when there were five people hospitalized with the virus (none in an ICU).
Vaccinations
As of July 27, across the WDGPH region there were 158,516 residents (59.8% of those 12 and older) who received at least three vaccine doses and 258,432 people (89% of those five and older) who received two doses, and just over 7,000 who received a single dose.
At the county level, as of Wednesday, there were 50,546 people in Wellington (60.7% of those 12 and older) who received at least three vaccine doses, 80,232 people (87.5% of those five and older) who received two doses, and just over 2,000 who received a single dose.
Fourth doses are available as of July 14 for all Ontarians aged 18 to 59 and WDGPH announced that Moderna vaccines for those aged six months to five years will be available this week.
Deaths
One new death attributed to COVID-19 has been reported in Wellington County this week.
To date, a total of 165 deaths across the WDGPH region have been attributed to COVID-19, including 55 in Wellington County.
Outbreaks
As of July 25, there were six active COVID-19 outbreaks at health care facilities in the region:
- Guelph General Hospital (Unit 7 east), declared on July 18;
- Dufferin Oaks long-term care facility in Shelburne, declared July 11.
- Village of Arbour Trails retirement home (Emma Unit) in Guelph, declared June 30;
- Caressant Care long-term care facility in Arthur, declared July 20;
- Chartwell Royal retirement home in Guelph, declared July 21;
- Homewood Health Centre in Guelph, delcared July 20;
- Morriston Park retirement home in Puslinch, declared July 22; and
- Village of Riverside Glen retirement home (one unit) in Guelph, declared July 24.
An outbreak at Louise Marshall Hospital in Mount Forest (declared July 9) was declared over as of July 25.
An outbreak at Highland Manor Retirement Home in Fergus (declared July 12) was also declared over on July 25.
