Couple allowed to park in arena parking lot

In not too many places would a weekend rendezvous require a municipal bylaw.

However, it is the case in Minto – under very specific cases.

Recently councillors here passed a bylaw allowing weekend parking in the Harriston arena parking lot from Oct. 1, to Sept. 30, 2011.

The reasoning behind the agreement was a request from Brenda Kipp and Bob Birkett.

Mayor David Anderson said he had been contacted by Kipp, who lives in London, and her partner-boyfriend lives in a different location, and Harriston-Minto is a central location.

As a result, Anderson said Kipp asked if they could park one of their vehicles locally, and carpool the rest of the way to Wiarton – to save on gas.

“We were able to accommodate them, and the bylaw indicates if there is any damage to the vehicle, the municipality is not responsible,” Anderson said.

He explained the car will be parked in the front of the community centre, directly in front of the video camera.

“I think they are more than happy we were able to accommodate them,” Anderson said.

Councillor Rick Hembly quipped, “It’s nice that they’re going green.”

Anderson added that he had checked with deputy-clerk Bill Winegard, who recommended the agreement be drafted.
