Centre Wellington council has granted Wellington County’s social housing project adequate sewer and water hook-ups.
The county is planning to build a 55 unit social housing building on Gordon Street in Fergus, and the construction work has already started.
Township planner Brett Salmon told council’s committee of the whole on Monday the project was approved in July and the site plan was presented in November.
“The plans are of a very high quality,” Salmon said, noting they contain a “green” design. The county has set high environmental standards for all of its new buildings.
Salmon said the building needs 55 units, but there is room for two buildings on the site, so it requested the total needed immediately.
Salmon noted that there are 143 units of sewage allocation available in Fergus, and 1,899 water units, so the township can accede to the county’s request.
Earlier this year, Wellington County received $4.3-million in grants for social housing, and decided that Fergus offered the best location for it. The building will have 37 one-bedroom units and 18 two-bedroom units. The plan is to rent it to people who can use some assistance. It is for people who are employed by could use some assistance because they cannot afford housing. The building could house families, single people, or people with disabilities. They would pay 80% of the average rent.
After hearing Salmon’s report, councillors approved the request.
Councillor Fred Morris was absent.
