Wellington County 4-H held its agricultural workshop on March 24 at the Grand River Raceway. The 2009 paperwork was given out to the leaders and Julia Whalen, 4-H Ontario specialist, gave a provincial update as well as having leaders participate in a couple of Farm Safety exercises. Whalen also mentioned the 5Cs of positive youth development – competence, connection, confidence, character and caring.
Many thanks to the Grand River Raceway and Halwell Mutual Insurance for sponsoring the Agricultural Workshop.
Wellington County 4-H held its life skills workshop on March 28 at the Alma Hall, Alma. June Switzer led the group in rug hooking, and the group learned latch rug hooking, traditional rug hooking, and braided rugs. It also learned almost all materials can be used for hooking and braiding – even bailer and binder.
Whalen went over the secretary and press reporter book expectations and the youth leader book expectations. The group also covered the importance of having volunteers screened and the health and safety forms and the waivers.
Whalen also discussed the locally approved projects – approved by the county and then the project is forwarded to 4-H Ontario for the final approval.
