County recognized for efforts to divert batteries from landfill

WELLINGTON COUNTY – The county recycled tons of batteries last year, and it has been recognized for the effort.

The county recently announced it has been named a 2023 Leader in Sustainability by Call2Recycle Canada (C2RC), an award granted each year to organizations that display an exceptional commitment to the environment and responsible battery management.

“Each year, Canadians recycle more and more of their used batteries with Call2Recycle thanks to the ongoing partnership of organizations like the County of Wellington,” C2RC president Joe Zenobio said in an news release. “The support we receive from the County of Wellington helps us achieve our mission of maximizing battery diversion from the waste stream, which in turn protects wildlife, the environment and our communities.”

In 2023, the county collected 11,173 kilograms of batteries through the Call2Recycle program, making it one of the program’s top performing partners. It was also more than a 10 per cent increase over its 2022 amount.

“This is the third year in a row that Wellington County has received this prestigious award,” Solid Waste Services Committee chair Stephen O’Neill said in the release. “This award recognizes the residents of Wellington County and their commitment to protect our environment and keep hazardous materials out of our landfill.”

Call2Recycle is Canada’s leading organization for battery collection and recycling, the release stated.

It offers collection and recycling services for household batteries, as well as e-transport batteries used to power e-bikes, e-scooters, e-skateboards, hoverboards and electric vehicles.

Since its inception in 1997, Call2Recycle has diverted more than 45 million kilograms of batteries from landfills, the release stated.
