Each year, from January to March, student nutrition programs that receive funding through the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington’s Food and Friends Program hold the Help Kids Live Free From Hunger Campaign.
The campaign raises awareness and much-needed funds for student nutrition programs.
Each school participating in the Help Kids Live Free From Hunger Campaign raises funds for its own nutrition program. At the conclusion of the campaign the foundation awards the top recipients in four different categories with an additional $250 for their nutrition program.
The Wellington County recipients of the four awards are:
– St. Mary Catholic School for most improved program, raising $718 more than in 2017;
– Arthur Youth Options for most funds raised online and for most funds raised per capita, raising $509 through online donations and a total of $709 by 20 students; and
– J.D. Hogarth Public School in Fergus for the strongest spirit award, for hosting an Olympic-themed campaign complete with an Olympic Ring Toonie Tracker and a visit from Canadian Olympian Krista DuChene, who spoke to students about the importance of healthy eating and pursuing dreams.
In Wellington, 22 student nutrition programs took part to raise $13,607, contributing to the $77,588 total raised in Dufferin, Wellington and Guelph.
The Food and Friends program supports 106 student nutrition programs in Dufferin, Wellington and Guelph.
Students have access to nutritious food so they can have the energy needed to focus on school work and get through the day, organizers say.
Over 17,000 students are served through the program.
