KENILWORTH – Wellington county councillor Steve O’Neill recently updated Wellington North on a number of initiatives underway by the county.
O’Neill serves on both the economic development and solid waste committees.
He noted that at Wellington North’s first open forum session last month, councillors spoke on the need for more local housing help for the township.
“It is a topic much discussed at the county,” he said
O’Neill added it also came up as an issue at the Wellington County municipal economic development meeting recently in Elora.
The meeting included a two-hour housing strategy discussion, he said.
“The township and the county are obviously taking this seriously and we expect the housing pilot project that Wellington North and the county are going into will have some solutions that can be rolled out county-wide,” he explained.
“Other county councillors are quite interested in those results because they have the same issues as Wellington North where there is not enough housing rental.”
Taste Real Wellington also involves a number of local farms and businesses.
This ties in with the Wellington North Farmers Market, which reopens in Mount Forest later this month.
O’Neill stated, “we are a rural county and agribusiness is a large driver of economic development in the county.” He said the county is working on Ride Co., a ride-sharing service similar to Uber.
“It is going to be operating county-wide starting in October,” O’Neill said.
He added that there are a number of local employers interested in the service.
More information should be available in the future.
