County councillors hope they finally have a speed limit set near Ponsonby Public School.
Council had received a request over a year ago to lower the speed limit near the County Road 7 school from 80km/hour to 60km/hour.
Residents argued there are no streetlights on the road and the school is often busy at night, making it difficult for pedestrians leaving the school and drivers using the road.
The reason for the request was the death of a woman who was struck after dark after attending an event at the school.
Council set a speed limit of 60, and immediately ran into complaints from unsuspecting motorists who griped about suddenly receiving tickets.
Then, a councillor suggested the warning signs to slow down were placed too close to the set speed limit signs.
County officials checked and found they are consistent with similar signs on provincial highways.
Council however, agreed to consider further changes because of concerns the public did not understand the reason for the sudden decrease in the speed limit.
The county has now set a speed limit of 70km/hour near the start of the built up area of the community near the school, with a 60km/hour zone closer to the school itself.
Council agreed moving the slower speed limit closer to the school was the best way to proceed, and it was approved.
