As of Jan. 1, county residents can put more items into their blue boxes.
The the following new items now qualify for recycling pick-up:
– gable-top cartons (such as milk and juice cartons);
– drink boxes (such as juice, soup, and soy boxes); and
– frozen food boxes (frozen entrées, ice cream cartons).
Those new materials will be marketed by Waste Management Incorporated as part of the county’s processing and marketing contract. Collecting and marketing those materials will divert an estimated 20 tonnes from landfill each year. The revenue received from the sale of those materials are expected to more than offset the cost of collecting and processing them.
“The county is consistently looking for ways to provide more diversion services to our residents,” said solid waste services chairman Don McKay. “I’m very excited that the county was able to add these new materials to the blue box program at no additional cost to taxpayers.”
The blue box program helps to extend the life of the county’s two active landfill sites. For more information, residents can visit www.wellington.ca or call 519-837-2601.
