Councillors hear pick-up of rural garbage could end soon

Garbage pick-up in rural Minto could become a thing of the past this October.

The reason, surprisingly, might be because of a general lack of participation in the rural garbage pick-up and recycling pilot project offered by Wellington County.

County councillor Mark MacKenzie was recently at Minto council and he explained what was happening at the upper tier level.

He said the pilot project for rural garbage pick-up and recycling ends in October and the town may be asked to revisit its needs in regards to solid waste.

Mackenzie said current participation numbers indicate the pilot project should not continue after October.

Deputy-Mayor Judy Dirksen said it seemed some individuals made good use of the service while others had their own way of dealing with refuse and recycling materials. She added that at one time rural residents paid the same amount as urban areas for recycling costs.

Clerk Barb Wilson asked whether the project took into consideration the amount of material versus the number of participants. Mackenzie said it did.
