kenilworth – Councillors here want to erase all traces of graffiti from municipal properties in the township.
On Monday night, council reviewed a recommendation from its recreation advisory committee that “any graffiti problem be removed within 24 hours, no matter what department it concerns.”
Clerk-administrator Lori Heinbuch said the resolution would be forwarded to all of the township departments for comment.
While discussion originated at the recreation committee level – specifically local arenas and parks – councillors have no qualms in applying it to other public properties.
In later discussion, Mayor Mike Broomhead said that the township already has an unofficial policy to accomplish the same goal.
The graffiti issue cropped up because of a recent incident in which ugly marks were not cleaned off for several days, and by that time, it was harder to remove.
Broomhead wanted to ensure all such graffiti is removed within 24 hours, to discourage further incidents. He suggested that communities that take a proactive stance on the issue tend to have fewer incidents.
