Council rejects storage zoning amendment

Wellington North council has shut the door on a comprehensive storage container bylaw after several public meetings on the issue.

Council, at its Sept. 23 meeting, elected not to move ahead with the bylaw after its building and property committee recommended it not proceed.

The proposed bylaw was intended to implement provisions within the township zoning bylaw to allow and regulate the use of trailers and shipping containers or other similar structures for storage on commercial, industrial and large agricultural properties.

Council was told the current zoning bylaw does not have provisions to regulate these types of structures.

However, the building committee contended building code regulations and property standards in Wellington North contained enough safeguards to regulate storage facilities.

Similar concerns were raised at public meetings on the issue, the latest held in August.

Committee chairman Dan Yake said the committee found regulations in the proposed zoning amendment “too cumbersome.”

“We felt the bylaw was more cumbersome than we needed at this time,” Yake said. “It is probably more work than this council and staff needed to be involved in.”

Mayor Ray Tout agreed.

“If there are property standards issues and complaints forwarded they will be dealt with through property standards,” the mayor said.

Resident Gerald (Shep) Sheptunko, who is a member of the township’s economic development committee and attended Monday evening’s meeting, thanked council for quashing the proposed zoning amendment.

He had raised several concerns about it at previous meetings.
