Council paid over $78,000 in 2010

The information is released for information only, but many residents are interested in exactly how much money local politicians make in a given year.

In Mapleton, the total remuneration and expenses paid to council in 2010 was $78,328; up 2% from $76,647 in 2009.

Given that 2010 was an election year, there are two mayors and six councillors included on last year’s remuneration list, which was provided to council on Tuesday.

Previous Mayor John Green made a total of $16,842, while current Mayor Bruce Whale made $1,954 for his brief time as head of council in 2010.

As for councillors, Mike Downey, who was re-elected in November, made a total of $15,058, while Jim Curry (also re-elected) made $16,115.

Dennis Craven, who was not re-elected, made $13,109 for 11 months on council, while Whale made $12,615 for serving as a councillor until December (for a total of $14,569 on the year as both councillor and mayor).

New councillors Neil Driscoll and Andy Knetsch made $1,014 and $1,619 respectively for 2010.

The numbers for council vary because of different amounts paid for meetings (other than council), conventions, seminars, registration fees, hotels, mileage, parking, meals and other expenses.

The mayor’s base pay last year was $15,273 – split between Green ($14,000) and Whale ($1,273) – while the base pay for councillors was $11,879 (less for newly-elected or non-returning members).

For all the other items listed above, Green was paid $2,842,  Whale $2,408, Craven 2,220, Curry $4,236, Downey $3,179, Driscoll $25 and Knetsch $630.
