If a donation comes from within the Town of Minto to help support a community centre in its sister city of Minto, ND, those funds will not come from local tax dollars.
Recently Mayor David Anderson, fresh from a visit to that community, made a suggestion that a donation be made – as a means of strengthening the ties between the two communities.
However, the first recommendation came from councillor Wayne Martin.
He recommended that if the idea is approved, it be done outside of the tax base.
While Martin has no objection to a donation, he suggested there are numerous local community groups and organizations which also need support.
When Anderson suggested a fundraising event, councillor Rick Hembly considered that to be an excellent idea.
Councillor Dave Turton’s suggestion was that a donation could come from councillors themselves.
Deputy-mayor Judy Dirksen suggested another idea could be considered to strengthen the ties between the two communities.
She noted that the local museum – admittedly the Walsh County museum – seems vague on the information about the links between the two communities.
Dirksen said that perhaps a display on the links could be created.
“Even a photo at the city office would get our presence out there without spending tax dollars,” she said.
Councillor Tammy Reiner was in agreement. She believed over the next few months local residents “will be fundraised to death” to support various causes.
