WELLINGTON COUNTY – The County of Wellington’s Solid Waste Services Division announced upcoming changes to user pay garbage bag fees effective July 1.
The fee increase was deemed necessary to ensure the continued provision of high-quality waste management services to residents.
Fee Increases:
– large user bag: from $2 to $2.50 each
– small user bags: from $1.50 to $2 each
– bag fee at waste facility sites: from $2 to $2.50 (no charge if garbage is in yellow user pay bags)
“Costs in most sectors, including manufacturing, have increased significantly since the last fee increase in 2016,” said Warden Andy Lennox.
User pay systems are considered a best practice for waste management as there is more incentive to reduce waste and divert materials away from landfill into organics and recycling streams.
“Wellington County keeps fees lower than other municipalities which use a similar user pay system,” commented Councillor Stephen O’Neill, Solid Waste Services Committee Chair.
