Cost of burials no longer dirt cheap?

Recent increases might have some residents thinking the cost of being put in the ground has gone through the roof.

Locals already feeling stiffed by the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) got some more potentially unwelcome News recently when Guelph-Eramosa Township approved significant price increases for burials at the Rockwood cemetery.

The township has approved a 14% increase, from $700 to $790, for full-size interments, and a 26% increase, from $310 to $390, for cremation burials.

Chief Administrative Officer Janice Sheppard explained the increase would put costs at the Rockwood cemetery on a level with interment prices at Woodlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Guelph, which holds the contract for burials in Rockwood.

Sheppard told council Woodlawn manager Paul Taylor was requesting the interment price increases, which would be the first cost adjustment for either plots or services in?Rockwood since 2007.

The increases in burial prices, combined with the implementation of the HST on July 1, which added an extra 8% tax on funeral services, mean significant hikes for anyone planning a local funeral.
