COPS committee holds youth dance

About 100 youth attended a dance here on June 3 at the community hall.

The community oriented policing committee (COPS) thanked the sponsors: The Town of Minto, Palmerston L&M, Harriston L&M, Grays Auctions,  Harriston New Orleans Pizza and Dan Bieman from 101.7 The One.

Many community members assisted in running the event and chaperoning. The committee will be holding further dances due to the interest and great response.

The group will be looking for community and business support in sponsoring those events to cover the cost of the hall rental. The committee is looking to bring a Road Watch program to Minto. The fundraising efforts will help finance that licencing fee as well as signs to advertise it.

The committee is an organization that consists of community members with an interest in crime prevention and looking into other local concerns and issues.

The committee is looking to assist the youth in Minto and recently conducted a survey of Grade 5 to 12 students from Norwell District Secondary School, Minto Clifford Public School, and Palmerston Public School. The students were asked what, if any, recreational activities, youth programs, or equipment, they would like to have available in their community? Some responded they wanted a youth dance.

The committee felt the kids appreciated being asked and were excited to take part in the survey. Harriston Queen of the Fair Jessica Oelshlagel  assisted by going class to class in the schools to present the survey to the students.

The committee has a new webpage on the Minto website, under the Living section. The committee invites everyone to visit the webpage and take part in a community safety survey of Minto residents.

For more information or to become a member of the committee, contact OPP Constable Todd Pridham at 519-323-3130. The committee meets the last Monday of the month at the Palmerston Fire Hall at 7pm. The June 27 meeting will have Victim Services and the Wellington County OPP Domestic Violence Coordinator give presentations.
