On April 23 from 10am to 1pm, residents in Eden Mills will be commemorating Earth Day with a number of events, including the initial site preparation for the area’s first Edible Forest Garden, to be located in Memorial Park.
The Edible Forest Garden is intended to mimic the diversity of a forest, while producing edible nuts, fruits and vegetables.
Like a forest, the garden will also contain pollinator plants and plants that accumulate nutrients in the soil. Once the garden is established, village residents and visitors will be free to visit regularly and eat what they discover.
The Edible Forest Garden idea arose from the permaculture principles of Earth care, people care and fair share: caring for the Earth by creating a bio-diverse mix of plants, caring for people through providing healthy food and fair sharing by allowing everyone to sample the harvest.
A small group of local volunteers approached the Township of Guelph-Eramosa with the idea for this project and were given approval to go ahead in a currently undeveloped area of the park.
The township has donated trees for the garden and RBC has donated funds to purchase materials. Several RBC staff will be among the volunteers pitching in to get the garden started.
Those who wish to participate can join community members at 10am on Saturday at the playground area in Memorial Park.
