Community involvement in Redneck Games tops for third year

While many community events like the Redneck Games reach the top 100 list of provincial festivals and events, few reach the top award for community involvement three times running.

On March 6, the Town of Minto Canadian Redneck Games were honoured at the 2010 Festivals and Events Ontario Achievement awards in Ottawa by being recognized as one of the Top 100 events in the province of Ontario.

The Top 100 Ontario Festivals program acknowledges excellence in the province’s festivals and events industry and the Top 100 designation carries the highest visibility of all of FEO’s awards programs. To be selected, festivals and events must meet the majority of the following criteria:

– ability to attract visitors regionally, provincially, or nationally

– quality experience;

– community based;

– annual event;

– uniqueness of event;

– demonstrated or potential for growth;

– audience involvement: and

– contribution to the community.

The Canadian Redneck Games also won the Best Community Involvement Award for the third year running.

The fifth annual Canadian Redneck Games takes place June 25 to 27. Visit www.canadianredneckgames.ca for more details.

The Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games took home top provincial honours in the best media-marketing-promotional campaign category at the annual Festivals and Events Ontario Conference

“Scotland…without the airfare,” the festival’s marketing campaign, featured the complete inventory of advertisements, brochure, festival program, radio campaign, and special website contests.

Competition was steep, and included notable festivals and events such as the Southside Shuffle Blues and Jazz Festival of Mississauga, Rideau Canal Festival of Ottawa, and the Caribana Festival of Toronto.

“On behalf of the board of directors, it was indeed a pleasure to receive this award on behalf of the hard working volunteer marketing committee,” said Deb Dalziel, president of the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games.

“The volunteer committee, under the direction of … Helen Noels and the creative genius of Carolyn McLeod-McCarthy, produced a remarkable campaign of vivid images of Scottish heritage and pageantry depicted at our annual event.

The volunteer committee of these two members, as well as Bill Longshaw, George Loney and Bruce Lloyd, collaborated equitably with splendid results.”

Along with the award, the festival was a recipient of the 2010 Top 100 Festivals and Events of Ontario

Sensational Elora was lauded with the best advertising product for the soup bowls used in its Soup Off fundraiser.
