Wellington to host Immigration Summit

by Jaime Myslik

ELORA - Immigration and economic development will be the topic of discussion at an upcoming Immigration Summit at the Elora Mill.

Wellington County, supported by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, is hosting Immigration Summit: The Economics of Rural Immigration on Feb. 20.

The event will include immigrant entrepreneurs, employers, economic development practitioners, and representatives of the settlement sector and business community. The goal is to highlight the economic importance of immigration to Wellington, said Tom Lusis, of the county’s economic development department. He added the focus will be best practices to attract and retain workers.

“We believe the sessions will be informative and of interest to a broad audience,” Lusis said.

“We will have resources developed ... employers who have successfully hired newcomers, and representatives from agencies that employers can connect with to tap into a labour pool which they may have overlooked.”

He added there will be an advocacy session allowing stakeholders to voice concerns about immigration programs and challenges facing rural employers to use them.

The summit is open to anyone interested and costs $40. For tickets/information  visit
