CLIFFORD – President Vic Palmer is ready to announce that the Clifford and District Horticultural Society hosted its first information meeting of 2021 on Sept. 21 at the Clifford Community Hall.
Society directors have met via teleconference and are now meeting in person at the John Hobelman Memorial Rotary Pavillion.
The meeting was held following Town of Minto COVID-19 protocols.
Paul Knowles of Baden spoke on “the odd and eccentric truth about gardeners.”
Society president Vic Palmer expressed pride in all of the volunteers who keep the flower boxes and gardens looking beautiful.
Town of Minto landscape manager Paul Judge and his crew have kept the hanging baskets and flower boxes thriving. The plants and flowers did take a beating in the recent storm that brought terrific winds, rain, and hail, but they survived and are still attracting compliments. Plantings are maintained at the post office, arena, community hall, fire hall, Rotary parks, cemeteries in Clifford and Lakelet, the Cenotaph park, and at the intersection at Kettles Restaurant as well as the flower boxes at the arena and the smaller flower boxes along Elora Street.
The flower beds along the fire hall wall were uprooted and removed to allow for further upgrades at the fire hall, but there are still some wonderful flowers blooming under the fire hall display sign. Dani (Hill) Clemmer and her three children Maggie, Hannah, and Phoebe were on their way to deliver home-grown tomatoes when they took time to admire the view.
The horticulture directors are looking at hosting memorial tree plantings in honour of volunteers Marion Wylie and Barbara Harris on National Tree Day, Sept. 25. They are considering creating wreaths to sell ahead of the Santa parade. The annual general meeting may not include a potluck meal this year, but will be held on Nov. 23 at the hall.
The meeting is open to all, members and non-members alike, from Clifford or out of town, welcome.
