Knox Presbyterian Church in Elora is hosting a penny drive that will give residents a chance to empty their piggy banks and support good causes at the same time.
Knox Presbyterian in Elora will hold a drive-through penny collection on May 19 from 9am until noon.
Organizers are asking the community to clean out their penny containers and drop the pennies off that morning.
“It’s a quick and easy way to put your pennies toward good work in your community and beyond,” said Lloyd Phillipps, one of the event organizers.
With the federal budget announcement that, after 104 years, the penny is being phased out, the government is urging Canadians to donate their pennies to charity.
Funds raised through this penny drive will support the Knox youth group and Kn.E.C.T. (Knox Elora Care Team), a group of volunteers from the Centre Wellington area who offer their hands and hearts to help in the local community and on international projects.
The drive-thru penny collection will take place at Knox church, located at 51 Church Street in Elora. A group of volunteers will be located on the south side of the church round-a-bout, allowing cars to pull up, pass their pennies and drive on – no counting or rolling required.
Knox Elora is also celebrating its 175th anniversary in 2012. The church will be hosting several events throughout the year, including Doors Open on June 23.
On that day visitors can tour the church and learn about its history. The church will also have refreshments available that day, including its almost-famous pies.
