CAMBRIDGE – The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has a new chair and vice-chair. Mayor of Guelph-Eramosa Township and Wellington County councillor Chris White, has been appointed chair and North Dumpfries Township Mayor Sue Foxton, was appointed vice-chair.
Both White and Foxton were appointed by the GRCA board of cirectors at the general meeting on Jan. 22. Elections are held for both positions at the first board meeting each year. The 26-member GRCA board includes representatives appointed by municipalities within the watershed.
“The role of conservation authorities in Ontario has never been more important. As a leading watershed management agency, we remain focused on the health, wellness and sustainability of our communities,” says White. “I look forward to leading our board, working with all levels of government and supporting GRCA staff as we continue to work on the recent updates to the Conservation Authorities Act.”
Both the chair and vice-chair expressed appreciation to fellow board members and GRCA staff for their dedication and contributions in the stewardship of the water and resources within the watershed.
“As a lifetime supporter of the GRCA, I’m excited about the opportunity to support the board and GRCA staff, as we continue to adapt our organization in support of a healthy watershed where people live, work, play and prosper in harmony with our natural environment,” says Sue Foxton.
White has been a member of the GRCA Board since 2014. He was elected to Guelph/Eramosa Township council in 2003, became Mayor in 2006 and served as Warden from 2011-2014.
Foxton has been a member of the GRCA board since 2015. She served for 14 years as councillor for Ward 1 in North Dumfries Township before being elected as Mayor in 2014.
White replaces Helen Jowett, who was elected as the chair of the GRCA board in 2016, and Foxton replaces white, who was elected as the vice-chair, also in 2016.
