Passage of the Reform Act remained a cliffhanger of sorts, right until the end.
Senators did the right thing earlier this week by passing Michael Chong’s bill without amendment. Had they let the bill fail, it might well have signaled a death knell for Harper’s Conservatives. The irony, of course, is that Chong is a Conservative MP.
He and Harper may see things differently, but after multi-party support for Chong’s bill, manoeuvres in the Senate to cut it off seemed a desperate out for a group that wants to keep things the same old way.
The basics are there for reform and renewal. We wish Chong luck with the next steps ahead.
