Chong: Olympic torch will pass through riding

The Olympic torch relay will visit Halton Hills on December 19 and Wellington County on Dec. 28 – next year.

Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong has announced that the Town of Halton Hills, the Town of Erin and the Township of Guelph-Eramosa will all host the Olympic Torch in December 2009.

The government of Canada, in conjunction with the Vancouver 2010 organizing committee, announced the official route of the Olympic Winter Games torch relay in late November.

“These are Canada’s Games, and the torch relay will help showcase all of Canada to the world as it makes it way to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games,” said the Minister Responsible for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games Gary Lunn.

“The relay will go to every province and territory, all 13 capitals, in over 1,000 communities as it travels from Victoria to the North Pole, to St. John’s and back.”

Chong said, “Our government is bringing the Olympic Torch to as many Canadians as possible, with the promise to celebrate our community’s talents, history, and contributions to Canada.

“I look forward to celebrating with our communities.”

The 2010 Olympic Winter Games will take place in Vancouver and Whistler from Feb. 12 to 28, 2010. Vancouver and Whistler will also host the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games from March 12 to 21.

The Olympic Torch will journey through over a thousand communities across Canada.
