GO train service moved one step closer to Rockwood, Guelph and southern Wellington County on April 5, with an announcement from Wellington Halton Hills MP Michael Chong that federal and provincial governments will spend $30-million to improve the Credit River bridge on the Union Station-Georgetown GO train line.
Improvements to the bridge consist of adding a second track and provisions for a third, which is critical to meet current demand and allow for expansion to Rockwood and Guelph. Construction is expected to be complete in fall 2010.
The federal government is setting aside up to $15-million for the project, matching the $15-million from the provincial government.
The project is one of several GO Transit service improvements announced across the Greater Toronto Area and the Greater Golden Horseshoe.
“Projects such as this one will help increase economic growth and improve service for commuters on the Georgetown line,” said Chong. “This investment in public transit will also help reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and improve our environment.”
MPP Ted Arnott was also pleased.
“Improving GO Transit service in our area is an important priority,” he said. “I spoke to Jim Bradley just this week, urging him to support an expansion of GO trains through our area, and I’ll continue to push for this in the Ontario legislature.”
In addition, Chong also announced that GO Transit commuters who use GO bus services will benefit from $5.5-million in spending from federal and provincial governments in a new GO bus storage facility in Aberfoyle.
That covered bus storage facility will be constructed at Brock Road South and McLean Road. Those improvements will provide for future increases in bus services in the area.
