Children’s Foundation launches Free to Grow campaign

GUELPH – The Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington has launched a fundraiser to get kids off a wait list and into a recreational activity.

Through its Free to Grow program, the foundation provides the funds for recreational activities for children in low-income homes.

Activities include sports, arts, camps, driver’s education training and leadership development.

Last year, when COVID-19 hit and recreational programs were cancelled, the foundation began a Free to Grow at Home program.

Volunteers packed and delivered 935 recreational kits to kids in their homes.

This year, the foundation estimates that more than 500 kids will be on a waiting list and it is determined to bring that number down through its inaugural Give to Grow fundraising campaign.

“This campaign is a win-win, allowing kids to have the chance to grow the skills and confidence they need to reach their full potential, while also supporting our economy,” Emma Rogers, the foundation’s CEO, states in a press release.

The Foundation is setting an ambitious but achievable fundraising target with the goal to reach #NoWaitlist to ensure all 500 children (and possibly more) are given equal opportunities.

“We’ve got lots to smile about,” says Karyn Kirkwood, Free to Grow Program Director.

“We receive so many heartwarming notes of appreciation from parents who are so grateful that their kids have been given the same opportunities as their friends.”

But without the funds, the foundation can’t provide the kits to everyone who would benefit.

“No child should have to be turned away or wait to participate in these invaluable experiences that nurture healthy childhood development,” Kirkwood said.
