Chair business nears approval

A chair building business on Line 86 is near approval after there were no objections at a public meeting here on Aug. 12.

Mapleton council learned Eli Sherk, of RR1 St. Clements, wants to build chairs in a building on land owned by Amos B. Frey, at 7571 Line 86, RR1 Wallenstein.

Sherk requires site specific zoning to allow his furniture building business. The shop would have 1,600 square feet, much of it for storage, with a building area at one end.

Township Chief Administrative Officer Patty Sinnamon told council there had been no objections from the county nor from the Grand River Conservation Authority.

She added county planner Mark Van Patter has offered comments. Mapleton planner Linda Redmond said his issue is the proposal meets all requirements for a farm occupation, but it does not meet the agricultural components for z oning.

But the Provincial Policy Statement on land use does allow secondary uses on farmland, so site specific zoning is needed. With no one opposing the plan, council agreed a bylaw should be ready for Aug. 26. The results were unknown at press time.
