Centre Wellington chooses firm for transportation master plan

A Thornhill firm will be helping Centre Wellington pave the way for its future transportation needs.

At a special meeting on March 7 council awarded the work to WSP – MMM Group Limited of Thornhill for $129,935.

Managing director of corporate services Wes Snarr noted there was $230,000 allocated, “so this bid is actually well within budget.”

Councillor Mary Lloyd appreciated the proposal is a more comprehensive review.

She stated this will look at more than the condition of township roads and parking.

Mayor Kelly Linton said the Fergus BIA will be pleased to see “parking is going to be within the scope of this project.”

The consultant team will undertake a Transportation Master Plan and review current and future transportation network needs to accommodate future population and employment growth.

The plan will be used as a background document for the coming development charges review and official plan update, and is intended to prioritize capital projects to meet the needs of Fergus and Elora. Some of the work will include:

– assess the current state of the transportation network and provide recommendations to address growth;

– review potential alignments, triggers and timing of a Highway 6 bypass of Fergus or ring-road concept;

– determine the feasibility of transit service to and within the township;

– assess current parking utilization and future parking demands in downtowns;

– update transportation policies and schedules;

– ensure integration with future water and wastewater servicing projects, approved master plans, anticipated development and economic conditions;

– develop a traffic calming policy manual; and

– coordinate and establish partnerships with community and agency stakeholders.
