Since 1836 Fergus has been home to a vibrant agricultural fair hosted by the local agricultural society and volunteers that have worked hard year after year, generation after generation, to organize the annual event.
What once began as an agricultural fair to educate farmers about improved farming practices and encourage healthy competition promoting the advancement of farming, has evolved into what we know today as the Fergus Fall Fair – the 10th oldest fair in Ontario.
While agriculture is still the focus of the fair, over the years it has grown to include truck and tractor pulls, midway entertainment, handicraft and food exhibits and more.
The Fergus Fall Fair is truly a showcase of the talent among the Centre Wellington community and today’s volunteers are proud to be continuing an event with such a rich local history.
President’s message
Fergus Fall Fair president Andrew Taylor states, “It is hard to believe we are entering our 181st year of Fergus Fall Fair.
“It is my pleasure to welcome everyone to our wonderful event. It is even more exciting than ever as we celebrate our theme as ‘4-H: 100 Years in Wellington.’”
Geared for families
He notes that over the course of the year the many fair committees have worked hard to bring some of the best displays, activities and events, geared perfectly for families as well as children young and old.
“Many thanks also go out to all the volunteers, committee members and directors who spend countless hours working throughout the year to pull this event together.”
Ambassador’s message
Outgoing fair ambassador Connor French notes that as her time as the 2016/2017 Fergus Fall Fair Ambassador comes to an end, she is excited to pass down her title at this year’s fair.
“It was a huge privilege and honour to be able to represent the Fergus Agricultural Society throughout many events this year. I was able to expand my knowledge of agriculture and share what I learned throughout the community. It was heartwarming to share the importance of agriculture at the local fair with the youth.
“During my time as ambassador I have had the opportunity to attend different agriculture events locally and provincially … It has truly been a privilege to be a representative of Centre Wellington.”
Head out to Centre Wellington Community Sportplex in Fergus on Sept. 15, 16 and 17 to celebrate the 181st annual Fergus Fall Fair and 100 years of 4-H in Wellington County.
Something for everyone
From tractor pulls to cattle shows and from the Canadian Cowgirls Rodeo Drill Team to Farmers’ Olympics this year’s fair is certain to have something for everyone.
