Celebrate Erin deadline extended

Residents now have a few more days to think about who should be recognized for contributions to the local community.

Earlier this year, the town announced it would host a Celebrate Erin event, honouring outstanding volunteers while raising money for the local food bank.

If residents know of anyone who should be honoured for their volunteer efforts, nomination forms are available either as a PDF file or Word document. Residents may also contact organizers at celebrate@erin.ca .

On Feb. 5, Mayor Lou Maieron made note of the extended deadline. While he thanked local media for making the initial announcement, he requested a bit more.

“Like any event in its first year, it’s a little trying to get nominations in.”

As a result, the deadline for nominations was extended to Feb. 18 (Family Day).

While a few nominations had came in (as of Feb. 5), he hoped more would come in.

Councillor John Brennan said there are a number of categories including seniors, youth, environmental and general community service.

Brennan added nomination forms are available at the town office, online and at local libraries, community centres and a variety of businesses in both villages.

He suggested part of the situation is that the event is new and nomination forms were not available until mid-January.

“There just wasn’t enough time in the first go-around.”

He believed additional nominations will make the event a lot better.

“I know that there are people out there who are worthy of nomination, it’s just a matter of prompting to ensure those nominations come forward.”
