Cattlemen host annual meeting, recognize 4-H award recipient

The Wellington County Cattlemen’s Association (WCCA) held its annual meeting in Alma last weekend to reflect on the past year and to celebrate the contribution of community youth to the beef industry.

The highlight of the Jan. 17 celebration was the presentation of the Ron Wooddisse Memorial Award, given to its third recipient Michael Cook of Orton. The award is presented each year to the most improved Wellington County 4-H Beef Club member.

Cook was attending the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, and could not attend to accept the award, but still managed to pass along some words of gratitude.

“It is truly a privilege to be the third recipient of this award, and for me, a great ending to my 4-H career,” Cook said in a letter read by Huron County Calf Club president Brad Knight. “This award is a great acknowledgment of 4-H participation in our county and has topped off a fantastic 2013 year.”

Runners up for the 2013 honour were Alexa Avelar, Adam Black and Valerie Wallace (also unable to attend the event).

Award presenter Mary Ellen Wooddisse offered words of encouragement for 4-H members in attendance.

“So many times with school, 4-H, Sports and in life, it’s that one extra degree of effort that separates the good from the great,” she said.

“The only thing that stands between a person and what they want in life is the will to try and have the faith to believe that it is possible. Having a clearly defined goal can capture the imagination and inspire passion, it can cut through the fog like a beacon in the night.”

Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott was also in attendance to congratulate the winner and commend members of the cattlemen’s association for their work.

“Your industry is never without challenge as we know, and you have a great story to tell— one of resilience, determination … innovation, hard work … and a willingness to partner with other organizations to get things done,” said Arnott.

“And in the end there is a delicious, healthy and safe product; the best beef in the whole world.”

Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece and Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong were also present for the award presentation, along with Rob Unsworth WCCA advisory councillor.
