It was the first ever spring meet-and-greet for Cats Anonymous here on April 29 and it was a success.
The organization takes in unwanted and feral cats, spays and neuters and looks after their medical needs, and then finds home for the kitties. About 45 people attended the Sunday event.
Owner and operator Tish Walshe said in an interview the place has been “a little quieter” because kittens and their moms are in foster homes at the moment.
But, she said, the first spring open house and craft sale will be on May 27 from 10am to 3pm and their will be lots of kittens on hand and up for adoption. Cats are divided into groups, with those that get along well with others roaming freely and those who prefer to remain aloof placed in large cages. There was lots of petting and purring going on as visitors greeted friendly felines.
The next meet-and-greet is on May 14 from 6 to 8pm.
It is another opportunity for people to visit the shelter and see if they like one of the 50 to 60 cats that are living there.
Volunteer Maryanne Braendlein said there have been a large number of adoptions in the last few months, which is a positive sign. The Sunday event was held so people can get “a better sense of what we do.”
She said people could drop in and see if they like a particular cat. There are no adoptions during the meet-and-greets, but they give people a chance to reflect on what an adoption means and what their responsibilities to a cat will be.
Volunteer Jodie Abbott said of the day “It’s been pretty steady.”
Walshe said the reason the organization came up with the idea of a meet-and-greet is because “We don’t have regular hours for when we’re open.”
She said the spring open house will feature a lot of kittens and people hoping to adopt or just support the shelter can visit that day.
She explained it is now the season for kittens and “We’ll be wall to wall kittens.”
