Grade 3 and 6 students with the Wellington Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) exceeded provincial averages in reading, writing and math.
The latest Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) statistics on student performance in the three categories found local Catholic board students were above the provincial average.
Grade 3 students scored 70 per cent in reading compared to the provincial average of 68%.
In writing students scored 79% compared to 77% provincially, and in mathematics they scored 72% compared to the provincial average of 67%.
EQAO tests were conducted across the province in May and June of this year.
A similar trend was registered with Grade 6 students who posted a 79% average in reading compared to 77% throughout the province, 79% in writing compared to a provincial average of 76% and 66% in mathematics compared to an average of 57% across Ontario.
The board has registered gains (compared to provincial averages) the past five years, since poor results in 2009.
In 2009 the reading average among board Grade 3 students was 58% compared to the Ontario average of 61%.
In writing board students scored a 64% average (68% provincially) and in mathematics the score was 76% average for board students (70% provincially).
In mathematics board students in both Grades 3 and 6 have consistently scored higher than the provincial average in each of the past five years.
Grade 6 students registered 70% in 2009 compared to the provincial average of 63%.
Allan Asselin, superintendent of education and a former school principal, said the results are encouraging for the board and its students.
“We did very positively,” Asselin said. “We are trending positively, we have support from our parents, staff and faculty.”
The board has about 572 Grade 3 students and 595 Grade 6 students. There are 36 Grade 3 classes and 31 Grade 6 classes spread out in the 17 schools it operates.

Local WCDSB school results are as follows.
At St. Mary School in Elora Grade 3 students achieved 68% in reading (compared to the board at 70% and province at 68%); 84% in writing (compared to 79 and 77% respectively); and 74% in mathematics results (72 and 77%). Grade 6 results for the school in reading 88% in reading (79% for the board and 77% provincially); 945 in writing (79 and 76%); and 75% in math (66 and 57%).
At St. Mary School in Mount Forest Grade 3 students achieved 58% in reading (compared to the board at 70% and province at 68%); 62% in writing (79% at board and 77% at the province); and 74% in mathematics (72 and 77%). Grade 6 results for the school scored 88% in reading (compared to 79% at the board and 77% provincially); 94% in writing (versus 79 and 76%); and 57% in mathematics (66 and 57%).
At St. Joseph’s in Fergus – Grade 3 students scored 70% in reading (board 70% and province 68%); 74% in writing (79 and 77%) and 79% in mathematics (72 and 67%). Grade 6 results for the school were 84% in reading (79 and 77%); 81% in writing (79 and 77%) and 70% in mathematics results (66 and 57%).
At St. John’s in Arthur the Grade 3 scores were 44% in reading (compared to the board at 70% and province at 68%); 61% in writing (79 and 77%); and 56% in mathematics (72 and 67%). Grade 6 results were 72% in reading (79 and 77%); 83% in writing (79 and 76%; and 56% in mathematics (66 and 57%).
At St. John Brebeuf in Erin the Grade 3 scores were 67% in reading (compared to the board at 70% and province at 68); 67% in writing (79 and 77%); and 70% in mathematics results (72 and 67%). Grade 6 results for the school were 76% in reading 76% (79 and 77%); 74% in writing (79 and 76%); and 68% in mathematics (68 and 66%).
